Closing down · Already closed
Closing your company? Your records may still pay.
When a company winds down, its email, chat and files usually get deleted. AI buyers will license de-identified copies instead, and that money can help close things out cleanly.
Yes. Closed and closing companies license their records to AI buyers all the time. The two rules: act before accounts are cancelled, and make sure whoever signs has the authority to (you, your board, or in bankruptcy, the trustee).
Don't cancel anything yet
The most common way owners lose this value is housekeeping. Cancelling your email, chat or file storage subscription can delete years of records for good. Before you shut anything off, either decide about licensing or make complete exports and keep them safe.
What's still useful after you close
- Company email and calendars, even if archived
- Slack or Teams exports
- Drive, SharePoint or Dropbox folders
- Exports from your CRM, ERP or operating system
- Code repositories with their history
If the company is already closed
If records survive in an archive, an export or a backup, they may still be licensable. Who can sign depends on how the company was closed. A dissolved company's former officers may still have authority to wind up its affairs; in bankruptcy, a trustee usually does. Check with counsel.
Proof that closed-company records sell
In August 2026, a closed U.S. airline's internal email, chat messages and files went to auction in bankruptcy court. A major tech company won with a $10 million bid, and an AI data company was named backup bidder at $7.5 million. Passenger and loyalty records were excluded. That's an airline with thousands of employees, so treat it as proof the market is real, not as a price for a smaller company.

S.01 FAQ
Wind-down questions.
SituationsCan I license data from a company that's already closed?
Often, yes, if the records still exist: archived accounts, exports or backups. The sooner, the better; storage gets deleted and logins expire.
SituationsShould I cancel Google Workspace or Slack before closing?
Not until you've decided about licensing. Cancelling can delete years of records permanently. Keep accounts active or make complete exports first.
SituationsWhat if the company is in bankruptcy?
A trustee or the court usually controls company assets, including data. Sales typically need court approval. Talk to the trustee or your bankruptcy counsel.
SituationsDo employee records come with it?
Buyers de-identify records and usually exclude sensitive HR files. You and your counsel decide what's in scope.
