How to sell your company's data to AI labs
In plain terms: you license a de-identified copy of your company's records to an AI buyer for a one-time payment. Here's how it works, what's included, and what to watch for.
You don't sell the company or the originals. You license a de-identified copy of past email, chat, files and operating records to an AI data buyer. The buyer reviews it, strips out identifiers, and pays you under terms you approve. Most programs want 20+ staff and 3+ years of records.
What "licensing your data" actually means
A data license gives a buyer the right to use a copy of specific records for a specific purpose, usually training and testing AI systems. You keep the originals, keep using them, and keep running your business exactly as before. The license spells out what's included, how it's protected, how it can be used, and what you're paid.
The word "sell" gets used a lot, including by us in a page title, because it's what people search for. In practice you're granting a license, not handing over ownership.
Why AI labs pay for company records
AI labs are racing to build agents that do real office work: answer a request, look something up, make a decision, follow up. Public web data doesn't show that process. Records from an operating company do, across thousands of real cases. The longer the history and the more your tools connect to the same work, the more useful it is.
Recent reporting has mid-sized companies getting offers from $100K to $2M for records like these.
What's included
- Company email and calendars
- Internal chat like Slack or Teams
- Shared files in Drive, SharePoint or Dropbox
- Your main operating system: CRM, ERP, TMS, practice management, field service
- Projects and tickets, SOPs and internal wikis
What stays out
Buyers de-identify records before use, removing or replacing names, email addresses, phone numbers and other identifiers. Some material is usually excluded entirely: patient health information, payment card numbers, privileged legal material, and files that belong to your clients. You can exclude anything else you want, though fewer exclusions usually means a better offer.
The process, step by step
- Match. Take the match quiz. We check headcount, years, tools and ownership against each buyer's requirements.
- Consent. If there's a fit, you approve the introduction to a specific buyer in writing. One buyer at a time.
- Review. The buyer asks about volume, tools and rights, and may look at samples through its own secure process.
- Terms. The buyer proposes a license: scope, exclusions, de-identification, usage, payment. You and your counsel review and approve it.
- Transfer. The buyer handles the export and de-identification. We never touch your data.
- Payment. You're paid under the terms you signed.
How long it takes
Usually weeks, not days. The biggest variables are how quickly you can answer the buyer's questions, how much legal review your contracts need, and how much data there is to process.
What it costs
Nothing. Buyers pay us a referral fee when a deal closes. It doesn't come out of your payment. See our disclosure.
Before you start: a quick checklist
- Do you own the accounts (email, chat, files) in the company's name?
- Can you sign for the company on your own?
- Do you have three or more years of records in your main tools?
- Do any client contracts limit how you can use their information?
- Do you have counsel who can review a license agreement?

S.02 FAQ
Common questions.
BasicsCan I really sell my company's data to AI labs?
Yes, though "license" is the right word. AI labs and data buyers license de-identified copies of a company's email, chat, files and operating records to train AI systems. You keep the originals and keep running your business. It's a one-time payment for a copy, not a sale of the company.
BasicsWhy do AI labs want my company's email and files?
They're training AI agents to do real office work, and the public internet doesn't show how work gets done inside a business. Years of records from a working company do: the request, the back-and-forth, the decision and the result.
BasicsWhat data do AI buyers want?
Company email, internal chat, shared files, and your main operating system (CRM, ERP, TMS, practice management), ideally covering three or more years. The more of those that connect to the same work, the more useful the set is.
ControlDo I give up ownership of my data?
No. You license a de-identified copy. You still own your records, keep using them, and approve every term of the license before anything is delivered.
ControlWhat about client and employee privacy?
Buyers de-identify records before using them: names, emails, phone numbers and other identifiers are removed or replaced. Regulated and privileged material, like patient records or attorney–client files, is typically excluded. You decide what's in and out.
ControlDoes 1-800-GOT-DATA see or store my data?
No. We never collect, hold or forward your data, files or logins. We qualify your company, and with your written OK, introduce you to a buyer. The buyer handles everything technical.
ProcessHow long does it take to get paid?
Usually weeks, not days. The buyer reviews your data, agrees terms with you, then handles the transfer and de-identification. Payment terms are in the license you approve.
ProcessIs this legal?
Licensing data you own is generally legal, but contracts, privacy laws and professional rules can limit what's included. We're not lawyers. Have your counsel review any license before you sign.
ProcessWill this change how I run my business?
No. A license covers a copy of past records. Your team keeps working the same way, in the same tools.
ProcessWhat happens after I take the match quiz?
We check your answers against each buyer's requirements and reply by email, usually within one business day. If there's a fit, we explain the next step. Nothing goes to any buyer until you approve that buyer in writing.
